Difference recurrence plots for structural inspection using guided ultrasonic waves

نویسندگان

چکیده

We propose a novel recurrence plot-based approach, the difference plot (DRP), to detect small deviations between measurements. By using prototypical model system, we demonstrate potential of DRPs and alternative measures, such as Pearson correlation, spectral analysis, or cross joint analysis. Real-world data comes from an application guided ultrasonic waves for structural health monitoring damages in composite plate. The specific challenge this damage detection is differentiate defects influence temperature. show that are suited following sense: two time series derive measurements at different temperatures hold practically full recurrence, whereas one measurement without with defect hugely reduced rate.

Wireless Nondestructive Inspection of Aircraft Wing with Ultrasonic Guided Waves

A prototype wireless guided wave inspection system is developed to inspect layered structures such as aircraft wing. The system includes a stationary antenna and an active antenna as transceivers, an on-board antenna as transponder, and PVDF comb transducers for generating and receiving ultrasonic Lamb waves. Preliminary experiments on a 0.8mm aluminium plate with a 12mm long, 50% through-wall-...

Rail Inspection with Guided Waves

The critical subject of transverse crack detection in a rail head is treated in this paper. Conventional bulk wave ultrasonic techniques often fail because of shelling and other surface imperfections that shield the defects that lie below the shelling. A guided wave inspection technique is introduced here that can send ultrasonic energy along the rail under the shelling with a capability of fin...

Amplitude Dispersion Compensation for Damage Detection Using Ultrasonic Guided Waves

Besides the phase and group velocities, the amplitude of guided wave mode is also frequency dependent. This amplitude dispersion also influences the performance of guided wave methods in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM). In this paper, the effects of amplitude dispersion to the spectrum and waveform of a propagating wave-packet are investigated. It is shown...

Mode selection of guided waves for ultrasonic inspection of gas pipelines with thick coating

Mode selection of guided waves in an elastic steel plate with thick coating layer has been studied here. E€ect of both thick elastic coating and damping of the coating layer on the dispersion and mode shapes has been investigated and modes that are less a€ected by elastic coating and damping have been identi®ed. For modeling the viscoelastic behavior of the coating layer, the standard linear so...

Qualification requirements of guided ultrasonic waves for inspection of piping in light water reactors

It is anticipated that guided ultrasonic wave (GUW) techniques will eventually see widespread application in the nuclear power industry as there are several near-term and future needs that could benefit from the availability of GUW technologies. Already, GUW techniques are receiving consideration for inspecting buried piping at nuclear power plants and future applications may include several Cl...
